Cannabinoids are chemical substances discovered in the Cannabis sativa types (and a few other plants). Cannabinoids exist naturally in these plants and become part of their biological structure. It needs to be noted that the cannabinoids discovered in these plants are technically called “phytocannabinoids”, however that they are organized under the more general category of cannabinoids.

You can imagine cannabinoids as the active ingredients of a recipe: without them, you would not have a completed product, in this case, the hemp plant. And while cannabinoids are vital, they are only part of the recipe. You also need flavonoids and terpenes, however we will describe their interest in another post.

The different cannabinoids in cannabis

Each cannabinoid is somewhat different from the others, however in the end, we consider that a single hemp plant contains more than a hundred. Among the barriers to understanding the action of each cannabinoid comes from the reality that they do not all exist in the same concentrations. Much of them are only present when the plant is growing, and need to be exposed to light and the atmosphere in order to establish.

Usually, ripe hemp plants (the ones we use to extract CBD) include comparable ratios of cannabinoids, including CBD, CBN, CBC and lots of others. These letters are acronyms of their taxonomic name and make it possible to distinguish them because of their chemical structure.

In hemp, CBD is the bulk in regards to the amount of cannabinoids, and the others exist only in minimal quantities. Using very advanced machinery, it is possible to separate specific cannabinoids and transform them into consumable products: CBD oils, capsules, lotions, and so on

. Having lots of cannabinoids on hand is great, however with no beneficial function, they are of no interest to us and this is where ESA can be found in. Thanks to millions of years of development, each of us (including including animals) has an endocannabinoid system (SEC). This special regulative system is able to connect with cannabinoids by triggering a wide range of modifications in our bodies.

Cannabinoid receptors and the endocannabinoid system

The endocannabinoid system is a vast network that extends from the main nerve system to the major organs and nearly everything around it. Cannabinoid receptors are discovered at numerous points in the ESA. These receptors serve as an activation point, only reacting when stimulated or hindered by cannabinoids.

When a cannabinoid is consumed (usually orally), it goes through our digestion system where it is broken down by the liver, prior to being dispersed to the body through the bloodstream. As it moves through the body, it targets receptors to connect. However, this is not a basic repulsive melee. Cannabinoid receptors generally act upon the key and lock concept, which is why some cannabinoids have effects that others do not.

CBD, for example, will only connect with receptors that match its chemical structure. The same guideline applies to all other cannabinoids, each communicating with specific receptors located in specific areas of the body. The location of this receptor figures out the biological response that will be set off.

There are lots of cannabinoids and they all have something different

SEC has evolved over millions of years and exists throughout our bodies.

Its primary function is to keep all of our biological systems in balance. This is important since the body works best in a state of homeostasis (dynamic balance). Lastly, through the consumption of cannabinoids, it is possible to encourage a variety of subtle biological modifications through receptors linked to ESA.

Although loving view CBD is the cannabinoid that intrigues us the most, there are lots of others, each with its own qualities. We will not go into detail in this post, however keep an eye out for a more accurate dive into each of them.
